SPIRITUAL ARCHITECTURE: THE FOUNDATION OF CHRIST

In the arena of construction, a building is only considered strong if it has a solid and powerful foundation. When a foundation is poorly constructed, both the building and its inhabitants become susceptible to grave damage. There is no doubt that the forces of nature will arise and when it does, a building and its inhabitants would only remain standing if a strong and stable foundation was put in place.

Our spiritual life is in no doubt any different. When the forces of life arise, both physically and spiritually, we will only remain standing if our foundation is strong, stable and secure. In building our spiritual architecture, we must first discover the most powerful foundation one can ever have – Jesus Christ and His Word. I know that the mainstream media teaches that we hold the keys to our destiny but if Jesus Christ is not the foundation upon which we have built our lives, we would have built our lives recklessly.

Anything created and cultivated without God is flawed and anything built upon a flawed foundation can be easily moved or shaken. People often try to build a foundation immersed in their education, business, profession or talent but all these things are just as fleeting as our physical lives are. The Covid-19 pandemic has surely reiterated to us how fragile and momentary the lives we are building for ourselves really are.

The first four words recorded in the Bible was “In the beginning, God” and so we must follow suit and ensure that God is the beginning, the starting point of anything we desire to do. We tend to want to pursue building our foundation around everything else but God and then reach out to Him to bless and keep the lives we have built upon our self-centred `interests instead.

God cautions us to build with care. 1 Corinthians 3:11 says “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ”. Practically, if God’s Word is not the material upon which we have built our lives’ superstructure, we are nothing, but feeble constructs built on sinking sand.

Before building anything, may we survey the topography of our hearts. How can we override the sinful characteristics of our nature and allow the handiwork of the Holy Spirit to take charge and set us apart? Christ is the solid rock on which we stand, and He is the chief cornerstone of our faith. May we tear down any structure built on flesh and let God be the foundation of all that we create.

SCRIPTURE:

Ephesians 2:10

“For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us].”
