THE PRACTICE OF MINDFULNESS

According to Mindful.org, Mindfulness is defined as the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. Many persons believe that this technique originated from the Buddhist practice of meditation but I believe its foundation is biblical but like many other things, it was skewed by the world. God has always encouraged us to be mindful of ourselves and to live in a continuous state of self-examination as we meditate upon God’s Word. Even when we venture into cross-examining the lives of others, mindfulness redirects our focus and reminds us that the only cross-examination needed is one of our own souls.

Being a Christian is not an easy feat. It is a lifelong subscription to journeying on the path that is less travelled. We are called to be in a continuous state of mindfulness as we battle between the two natures at war within ourselves on a daily basis. If we are not mindful of where we are on this journey and what we’re doing or rather, producing in our words, thoughts and deeds, we will be unaware of our own peril and unable to overcome it.

We are cautioned to engage in mindfulness because the beginning and end of all peril begins within.
Have you ever wondered why God defined our bodies as his temples and chose to situate his Spirit
within us and not outside of us? When God tells us to look within, he is really summoning us to look
at HIM. Philosophers have always motioned for people to find their source of power from within
themselves but what they are often ignorant of is the fact that true power can only be generated
from its Source. The Source of all true power is God and if he does not reside within you, you will be
deceived into believing that you are your own ultimate resource. It is very important for you to have
the indwelling of the Holy Spirit so you can activate all that he has deposited in you. The emphasis is
always on Christ who then works through and for you.

God’s Word is the X-Ray that highlights our broken pieces. It shows us where our spiritual wreckages lie on our journey with Christ and provides the remedies for restoration and healing. We should therefore make it our daily habit to take an X-Ray of our “spirit man” and ensure that he coincides with God. Who we are in the physical and spiritual should always testify to who God says we are.

I would like to zoom in our focus on 5 major things we should be mindful of before we utter any words or perform our deeds:

  1. Our Motives
Proverbs 16:2 – “All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, but the Lord weighs the motives.”
  2. Our Thoughts
2 Corinthians 10:5 – “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
  3. Our Beliefs
1 John 4:1 – “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
  4. Our Meditations
Joshua 1:8 – “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.”
  5. Our Minds
Romans 8:6 – “For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.”

PRAYER: Lord, help me to practice mindfulness as you prescribed it. Let me meditate on your Word
and let it be the source of light for my path. Examine my heart and help me to show myself
approved.
