Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the significance of WORDS, both spoken and written and I am utterly amazed at how God fashioned the intricacy of power and possibility within them. In the beginning, the earth was formless, void and overcome with darkness and when God declared the words “Let there be light”, “light” became instantaneously and has been ever since.
God’s Word (i.e. the Bible) ought to stand as the supreme Word that brings light for the continual illumination of our spiritual darkness. In addition to this, as believers walking and maturing in the Spirit, we can often find ourselves stuck meditating on specific “Words” spoken to us by God concerning our assignment, transformation or circumstance. What then, does God desire that we do with His Words which He has declared in John 6:63 as the embodiment of Spirit and Life?
Well I’m glad you asked!
God’s Word is a seed and the only environment in which God’s seed can grow is in the grow bed of one’s heart. When you have been genuinely born again in Christ, this seed is deposited into your spirit and this is why you are instructed to live by the Spirit and not in the flesh. Now seeds contain the very essence of life within them and God has assured us that His seed is the only seed that is imperishable and that produces life.
God’s overarching desire for a believer is for His seed to remain in his heart. How can we tell if His seed remains in someone? Let’s examine a few scriptures:
1 John 1:24 – “As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you will also remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is what He promised us – eternal life.
1 John 3:9 – “No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning because they have been born of God.”
2 John 1:9 – “Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
John 15:5 – “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:10 – “If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in His love.”
God’s seed remains in us through continual obedience to His commands and teachings and through our separation from sin. We can also bear witness to someone being of God’s seed by the fruits they bear. Apple trees can only bear apples and they only carry the seeds of the apple of its kind in its fruit. We do not see apples with orange seeds inside of them neither do we see apple trees bearing oranges for us to consume. Therefore, if someone has the seed of God within them, they will naturally bear the fruits that come from the Spirit of God residing within them. Their fruit will not be contaminated by the works of the flesh which produces death, but rather when eaten, the essence of its sweet taste is eternal life.
Words are the conduit for our spirits and God does not take lightly to words said nor received. Did you know that we will all be accountable to God on the Day of Judgment for every empty word spoken? In Matthew 12:37 Jesus said “For by your words you will be acquitted and by your words you will be condemned.” Empty words are words that are godless, powerless, fruitless, corruptible, and perishable. They are of the same nature of the earth when it was empty, formless and void in the beginning of time. They stand opposed and in direct contradiction to God’s declaration of light. When God declared light, He declared the Spirit of His Sovereign wisdom, knowledge and truth.
This is why God warns us not to believe every spirit but to test them to see if they are from God. We know that the mouth speaks what the heart is full of and whosoever contradicts what God has declared stands against Him. Darkness will always seek to contradict what God has said because darkness does not understand the light and it is unable to overcome it. The following verse gives us clarity on what contradiction to God’s Word entails:
Isaiah 5:20 – “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.
Darkness is symbolic of ignorance and so those who are unrepentantly of this world are bound to perish as they stumble blindly in their ignorance of God, His ways and their purpose. Only God’s words can give eternal life and if we trust every Word He has spoken over our lives through His Word and by way of the Holy Spirit, we will experience the refreshment of a purpose-filled life where our leaves are always green never failing to bear fruit.
As we conclude today’s blog, my only request is that you would make this statement the motto of your heart: “Whatever God declares is final and its seed is established in me. I will place my confidence only in Him for the name of my fruit is ‘purity’.”
