Life as we know and understand it is brimming with uncertainty. As believers, when the rough seas of life come upon us and the strong currents of circumstance beset us, we must have unhindered dependence on the Holy Spirit to steer our ships into the safety of God’s harbour continually.
When the dots in our lives seem to find no connection, we must take our eyes off what we think is a puzzle and focus our thoughts on God with the eyeglasses of His Word. When I say God, I mean all that encompasses who He is (His character, nature, declarations, promises and commands).
Human beings are innately wired with a deep rooted desire to understand “why”. We are always seeking to know whether the happenings of life are accidental or a sum result of our own doings or misgivings. We are a people programmed to trust only that which we can tangibly see, feel and predict.
It is unfortunate however, that our flesh renders us short-sighted because it can only calculate its logic based on our five senses. It is impossible to trust God from our flesh, our natural way of thinking via our senses because it is directly opposed to our spirits as new creations in God. Our flesh will always base its trust on what it can reason and convince itself of as truth. Our flesh will concoct and submit to a knowledge that is both limited and temporal so that we can ultimately look to anything and anyone but God for certainty.
If everything exists for God and through Him, I believe that He should be the foundation for where we build the thoughts that program our lives. As Christians, we are called by the Father of spirits to live and abide in Spirit and in truth. It is our spiritual nature that was made in the image and likeness of God not our physical man. Our spirits were born out of the womb of omnipotence and so God can only impart all that encompasses Him onto us through our spirits.
How then do we trust God without knowing “why”? It would be much easier to accept our misfortune if we knew the reason for it. In our times of trial and circumstance, I know it would give us great comfort and relief to at least understand if our trials were as happenstance as a lottery pick or even karma in effect. At least then, we would find consolation in knowing how the dots connect.
We love asking “why” when the circumstances are at odds with us but we are never quick to question “why” when everything is stacked in our favour. It seems as if we are always in a state of readiness to receive the goodness of life (deserving or not) but very resistant to the acceptance of the deep waters of trials and circumstance. Yet, it is the very same trials that craft and mould us into who we are destined to be.
Matthew 5:45 reminds us that God causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain to pour on the righteous and the unrighteous. When sin entered this world, the nature and knowledge of good and evil entered along with it. Because of sin, we cannot have one without the other and we are always vulnerable, exposed and affected by the elements of pain and brokenness because of this.
Despite our predicament of sin, there is hope for he who believes in Jesus Christ. As Christians, we must be able to know in part but trust God as a whole because it is in Him that we are made complete.
We serve a God who provided us with redemption from the strongholds of sin and its torment. We serve a God whose Holy Spirit resides within the tabernacle of our hearts and leads and guides us through an escape from every temptation and negative circumstance. We know that God works all things together for our good and without a mess, there can be no message for us to give as a testimony and witness to who He is.
You ask how to trust God without knowing and I ask how not to trust God when you don’t know. He is the only one who knows so who better to trust than Him. Don’t fall prey to the counterfeit promises, theories and evidences of the enemy. Fill up your spiritual tank with the Word of God and I can assure you that all that needs to be known will be revealed to you at the right time once you walk by faith.
Scripture:
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Prayer:
Lord, enable us to trust in you in the midst of doubt, fear and circumstance. Let us not waver in our beliefs but rather stand firm in the truth of your Word and the authenticity of who you are.
This was indeed an amazing read! Amazing digest! I was left wanting more, I’m hoping this is a weekly or even daily writing. The reminder was much needed. Trust is a major key in building and fortifying a relationship with our creator. I’m learning to do that everyday.
